Steams Most Played Games Of 2016 Aren’t What You Would Expect

Steam is getting bigger and better with each passing year. With more and more titles being released on the platform it isn’t hard to see why its one of the biggest game clients out there. However, the amount of content available doesn’t always equate to ‘good games’. And 2016 has been a year to prove that, with the vast majority of released titles failing to grab players attentions according to Data Tracker at GitHyp. Looking into what games were popular last year we’re going to be focusing on players per hour to help identify the MOST popular games on steam in 2016, and it’s quite a surprise:-

Players Per Hour:

  • Dota 2 / 636,607 avg. players per hour (#1 in 2015)
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / 360,600 avg. players per hour (#2 in 2015)
  • Team Fortress 2 / 50,802 avg. players per hour (#4 in 2015)
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 / 40,258 avg. players per hour (#5 in 2015)
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization 5 / 37,885 avg players per hour (#9 in 2015)

Not a single game released in 2016 managed to keep fans coming back again and again, with the top 5 releases all being games released in 2015. And it’s no surprise, as the fanbase for these games is huge. It’s always going to be a big feat to drag the die-hard fans away from their favourite titles, although a few games tried hard in 2016 they ultimately failed to hold the gaming community’s attention for long enough to make a dent.

Looking at Peak players, we see that No Mans Sky, XCOM2 and Dark Souls 3 managed to grab a sizable chunk at launch, but its seems that over time players went back to their trusted games,

  • Dota 2 / 1,286,617 peak players (#1 in 2015)
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / 845,806 peak players (#2 in 2015)
  • No Man’s Sky / 212,321 peak players (new)
  • XCOM 2 / 132,834 peak players (new)
  • Dark Souls 3 / 129,922 peak players (new)
